Within the kitchen garden at Mesnil Geoffroy old varieties of vegetables are cultivated which have now largely disappeared from markets in France.  It is rare in this regard.  The aim is to safeguard the heritage of traditional kitchen gardens for future generations.

Planted within the garden are old varieties of cucumber (lemon cucumber), onions, tomatoes, kale etc which were eaten in France at the beginning of the 20th century and are difficult to find nowadays.  They have surprising textures, some have decorative leaves, some subtle smells and others vibrant colours.  Labels about each vegetable provide helpful information.

A visit to the kitchen garden is a « must » for anyone interested in old vegetable varieties and how they were used in the kitchen.
