MODERN ROSE VARIETIES

Modern rose varieties are those which appeared from 1876 after « hybridization » (ie the process of combining different varieties to create a hybrid).  These include hybrid tea roses (which have dominated in the 20th century), floribunda roses and English hybrid roses which appeared in the 1960s.  English hybrid roses were created by David Austin who crossed old European rose varieties (such as gallica and damask roses) with hybrid tea roses.  This gives them a flower form reminiscent of old rose varieties.  They are very often highly scented unlike hybrid tea roses which are rarely scented.

Modern rose varieties flower more than once and some are in continuous bloom from June to October.
